Keppra
What is it?
A drug which acts on the central nervous system which is a pyrrolidone derivative, available as film-coated, oblong tablets in 3 different strengths. Blue tablets contain 250mg of levetiracetam, yellow tablets contain 500mg of levetiracetam and white tablets contain 1000mg of levetiracetam.
Medical Uses
Additional therapy for partial seizures which may or may not show secondary generalisation.
Dosage
Adults and children over 16 years, 500mg twice each day at first, increasing, if required by 500mg twice each day every 2 to 4 weeks, The maximum daily dose is 1500mg.
Special Care
Pregnancy, elderly people, kidney or severe liver disease. Drug should be slowly withdrawn.
Known Side Effects
Sleepiness, weakness, headaches, depression, emotional upset, insomnia, memory loss, convulsions, aggression, rash, vertigo, accidental injuries, dizziness, tremor, gastrointestinal upset, lack of co-ordination, hostility, double vision. All adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
