What is it?
An antirheumatic drug which is an interleukin-1 antagonist, available as a solution in pre-prepared syringes containing 150mg of anakinra per ml.
Medical Uses
With methotrexate, for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis which has not responded to methotrexate alone.
Dosage
Adults, 100mg once each day at same time by subcutaneous injection.
Special Care
Elderly, kidney disorders, neutropenia (neutrophil counts must be monitored brfore treatment starts and at regular intervals), history of infections or when there is risk of infection.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, severe neutropenia, malignant conditions, sensitivity to proteins derived from E. coli bacteria, severe kidney disease.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Live vaccines.
Known Side Effects
Neutropenia, severe infections, reactions at injection site, headaches. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM). Maaufacturer: Amgen.
