Klean-Prep

What is it?

An iso-osmotic laxative preparation available as a powder for reconstitution with water containing 59g of polyethylene glycol, 5.685g of sodium sulphate, 1.685g of sodium bicarbonate, 1.465g of sodium chloride, 0.7425g of potassium chloride. Available in sachets.

Medical Uses

Complete bowel clearance before surgery, colonoscopy or radiography.

Dosage

1 sachet should be added to 1 litre of water; adults, drink 250ml every 10 to 15 minutes until up to 4 litres have been drunk or rectal effluent is clear. Or, can be administered via a nasogastric tube at rate of 20 to 30ml per minute.

Special Care

Pregnancy, patients with diminished consciousness, impaired gag reflex, ulcerative colitis, reflux oesophagitis.

Avoid Use

Children, perforation or obstruction of intestine, toxic colitis, ileus, megacolon, retention of stomach contents, acute ulceration in gastrointestinal tract, patients weighing less than 20kg.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Medicines taken by mouth should be taken at least 1 hour before taking Klean-Prep.

Known Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, irritation of anus, cramps, distention of abdomen. In rare cases, allergic responses.
