Kytril
What is it?
An anti-emetic preparation which is a 51-IT 3-antagonist that acts to block vomiting and nausea reflexes which occur when 5HT3 receptors in the gut are stimulated. It is available as triangular, white, film-coated tablets containing 1mg or 2mg of granisetron as hydrochloride. Also, KYTRIL PAEDIATRIC LIQUID, available as a liquid containing 200µg of granisetron as hydrochloride, per ml. Also, KYTRIL INJECTION available as a solution in ampoules containing 1mg of granisetron per ml. Also, KYTRIL INFUSION, available in ampoules, containing 1mg of granisetron as hydrochloride per ml.
Medical Uses
Tablets and Paediatric liquid, prevention and treatment of vomiting and nausea caused by cytotoxic drug therapy. Injection and infusion, vomiting following operation (post-op nausea and vomiting or PONY), nau sea and vomiting caused by treatment with cytostatic drugs.
Dosage
Adults, tablets, 1 tablet 1 hour before chemotherapy begins followed by 1 every 12 hours; or 2mg as single dose each day. Injection, for PON N 1mg diluted to 5ml and given by slow intravenous injection lasting for 30 seconds, all before anaesthesia. Infusion, for nausea and vomiting caused by cytostatic treatment, normally 3mg diluted in 20 to 50ml of infusion solution and delivered by intravenous infusion over 5 minutes; or, diluted in 15ml of solution and delivered by intravenous bolus injection over 30 seconds. Can be repeated after at least 10 minutes has passed to a maximum daily dose of 9mg every 24 hours. Children, Paediatric liquid, 20µg per kg of body weight (but to maximum of 1mg), with first dose 1 hour before treatment with cytostatic drugs. Dose can be given twice each day for up 105 days. Injection and infusion, children undergoing treatment with cytostatics, 40µg per kg of body weight (but to maximum of 3mg), diluted in 10 to 30ml of infusion solution and delivered intravenous infusion over 5 minutes. Can be repeated after at least 10 minutes has passed, once in 24 hours.
Special Care
Pregnant women, patients with obstruction of intestine.
Avoid Use
Breast-feeding.
Known Side Effects
Constipation, headache, short-lived rise in level of liver enzymes.
