Lanoxin

What is it?

A cardiac glycoside, digoxin, available as 250µg white, scored tablets marked WEL. LCOME X3A. Also, LANOLIN 125, white tablets containing 125µg of digoxin marked WELLCOMEY3B. Also, LANOXINPG, blue tablets containing 62.5µg of digoxin marked WELLCOME U3A; Also, LANOXIN-PG ELIXIR, a solution containing 50µg of digoxin per ml. Also, LANOXIN INJECTION, containing 250µg of digoxin per ml in 2mn1 ampoules.

Medical Uses

Digitalis treatment, including chronic heart failure, heart failure with atrial fibrillation; supraventricular heart arrhythmias, especially with atrial fibrillation and flutter.

Special Care

Elderly, acute heart attack, atrio-ventricular block, thyroid disorder, severe lung disease, kidney impairment, malabsorption disorders, low blood potassium or magnesium levels, high blood calcium levels, imbalance in cations.

Avoid Use

Various forms of heart block and supraventricular arrhythmias, hypertrophic obstructive disease of heart muscle.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Captopril, calcium tablets or injections, carbenoxolone, cardiac glycosides, erythromycin, spironolactone, prazosin, diuretics, potassium-depleting agents. Lithium, diphenoxylate, flecainide, laxatives, amiodarone, quinidine, antacids, tetracyclines, corticosteroids, propafenone. Propantheline, neomycin, cholestyramine, sulphasalazine, penicillamine, cytostatics, metoclopraride, rifampicin.

Known Side Effects

Changes in heart rhythm, gastro intestinal upsets, conduction and visual disturbances, apathy, depression, weakness, psychosis, headaches.
