Lasix

What is it?

A loop diuretic available as white, scored tablets marked DLF containing 20mg of frusemide and white, scored tablets marked DLI containing 40mg of frusemide, both Also, marked with manufacturer's symbol. Also, LASIX 500, available as quarter scored, yellow tablets marked with the manufacturer's symbol and DIX on the reverse, containing 500mg of frusemide. Also, LASIX PAEDIATRIC LIQUID, containing 1mg of frusemide per ml. Also, LASIX INJECTION, available in ampoules containing 10mg of frusemide per ml.

Medical Uses

Lasix, fluid retention; other preparations, acute or chronic kidney disease.

Dosage

Lasix, adults, 20-80mg in 1 dose daily or every other day; Lasix 500, for hospital use only according to manufacturer's instructions. Lasix injection, 20 to 50mg as slow intravenous or intramuscular injection at first and according to manufacturer's instructions. Children, Lasix, 1 to 3mg per kg of body weight each day; Lasix paediatric liquid, 1 to 3mg per kg of body weight each day; Lasix injection, 0.5 to 1.5mg per kg of body weight each day, given in same manner as for adults.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, gout, diabetes, enlarged prostate gland, impaired urination, liver or kidney disease, Potassium supplements may be necessary. Children being treated with large doses of paediatric liquid may experience diarrhoea or abdominal wind.

Avoid Use

Lasix 500 in children, pre- coma caused by liver cirrhosis.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

NSAIDs, antihypertensives, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, lithium, digitalis.

Known Side Effects

Gout, rash, gastro-intestinal upset.
