Lexpec
What is it?
A haematinic preparation available as a syrup containing 2.5mg of folic acid per 5ml. Also, LEXPEC WITH IRON, a syrup containing 2.5mg of folic acid and 400mg of ferric ammonium citrate (equivalent to 80mg of iron). Also, LEXPEC WITH IRON-M, a syrup containing 0.5mg of folic acid and 400mg of ferric ammonium citrate (equivalent to 80mg of iron) per 5ml.
Medical Uses
Lexpec, megaloblastic anaemia due to a deficiency in folic acid; Lexpec with iron and Lexpec with iron-M, anaemias of pregnancy caused by deficiencies in iron and folic acid.
Dosage
Adults, Lexpec, 20 to 40ml each day at first for 2 weeks, followed by 5 to 20ml daily. Other preparations, women, 5 to 10ml each day taken before a meal throughout duration of pregnancy and continuing for 4 weeks after birth. Children, Lexpec only, 10 to 30ml each day.
Avoid Use
Megaloblastic anaemiacaused by deficiency of vitamin Biz.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Tetracyclines.
Known Side Effects
Constipation, nausea, mottling of teeth - (avoid by drinking through straw).
