Lipitor

What is it?

A statin and cholesterol lowering preparation available as film- coated, white, elliptical tablets in 4 different strengths, all containing atorvastatin as calcium trihydrate. Tablets are available in 10mg, 20mg, 40mg and 80mg strengths marked PD 155, PD 156, PD 157 and PD 158, respectively.

Medical Uses

Additional therapy (with dietary measures) in various forms of hyperlipidaemia; to lower LDL: HDL ratios and raise HDL; to lower total cholesterol: HDL ratios.

Dosage

Adults, start with 10mg once each day and increase as required at monthly intervals to a maximum dose of 80mg once each day. Little information is available for prescribing in children.

Special Care

Liver disease, alcohol abuse. Liver function tests should be carried out. Women of child-bearing age must use reliable contraception.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, persistent elevated liver enzymes, liver disease.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Digoxin, eolestipol, warfarin, cyclosporin, drugs metabolised by P450 3A4, niacin, erythromycin, azole antifungals, antacids, fibrates, oral contraceptives.

Known Side Effects

Headache, weakness, muscle pain, elevated CPK and ALT (enzyme) levels, gastrointestinal upset, insomnia.
