Liskonum

What is it?

A sedative, available as scored, white, oblong, controlled-release tablets containing 450mg of lithium carbonate (equivalent to 12.2mmol of lithium ions, Li�).

Medical Uses

Acute mania, hypomania, prevention of the recurrence of manic depression.

Dosage

Blood lithium levels to be kept in the range 0.8-1.5mmol per 1 (for mania or hypomania) and 0.51 . Ommol per 1 for prevention. Consult manufacturer's instructions.

Special Care

Commence treatment in hospital under expert supervision; salt and fluid intake to be kept up. Thyroid and kidney functions to be checked. Any symptoms of intoxication should be reported.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, Addison's disease, kidney or heart disease, underactive thyroid gland, sodium imbalance.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

NSAIDs, diuretics, flupenthixol, fluoxetine, methyldopa, carbamazepine, fluvoxamine, haloperidol, phenytoin, metoclopramide.

Known Side Effects

Muscle weakness, hand tremor, gastrointestinal upset, disturbances to ECG and brain, fluid retention, weight gain, under or overactive thyroid gland, intense thirst, skin reactions, polyuria (passing of large quantities of pale urine), changes in kidneys.
