Loxapac

What is it?

An antipsychotic and dibenzoxapine, available as capsules in 3 different strengths, all containing loxapine succinatein. Yellow/green capsules contain 10mg, light green/dark green capsules contain 25mg and blue/ dark green capsules contain 50mg, marked L2, L3 or L4 respectively.

Medical Uses

Psychotic disorders.

Dosage

Adults, 20-50mg each day to begin with in 2 doses and increasing over 7 to 10 days to 60-100mg daily. The maximum daily dose is 250.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, urine retention, patients with impaired mental function and co-ordination.

Avoid Use

Patients in a coma or depression induced by drugs.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Anticholinergics, depressants of the central nervous system, TCADs, lithium, other neuroleptic drugs, phenytoin.

Known Side Effects

Faintness, muscle twitches, weakness, dizziness, fits, drowsiness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, extrapyramidal effects, low or high blood pressure, skin reactions, nausea, changes in ECG and eye, headaches, effects on endocrine system, vomiting, dyspnoea (shortness of breath), anticholinergic effects.
