Lysovir

What is it?

An antiviral drug which is a viral replication inhibitor, available as red-brown capsules containing 100mg of amantadine hydrochloride, marked GEIGY

Medical Uses

Treatment and prevention of influenza A.

Dosage

Adults, treatment, 1 tablet each day for 4 to 5 days; prevention, 1 tablet each day for as long as is necessary, generally for 2 to 3 weeks if following vaccination or 6 weeks, if tablets alone are being used. Elderly patients may require less than 1 tablet daily or 1 tablet taken with a greater interval in between doses. Children, aged 10 to 15 years, 1 tablet each day.

Special Care

Elderly, liver or kidney disease, congestive heart failure, confused or hallucinatory disorders, previous heart or circulatory disease. Drug should be gradually withdrawn.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children under 10 years, severe kidney disease, previous stomach ulcer, history of convulsions. Drug should be gradually withdrawn.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Depressants and stimulants of the central nervous system, combined diuretics, levodopa, anticholinergic drugs.

Known Side Effects

Disturbance of the central nervous system, rashes, fluid retention/swelling in pereipheral areas, livedo reticularis (a circulatory condition causing a reddish - blue mottling of the skin giving a 'fishnet' appearance on the legs and sometimes the arms).
