Mabcampath

What is it?

A preparation of monoclonal antibody available as a concentrate for making up a solution for infusion, containing 30mg of alemtuzumab.

Medical Uses

Lymphocytic leulaemia in patients whose condition has not responded satisfactorily to treatment with alkylating agents or who have only had a short period of remission following fludavabine phosphate therapy.

Dosage

Adults aged over 17 years, usually 3mg on first day, 10mg on second day, 30ing on third day then 30mg 3 times each week, every second day, continuing for a maximum period of 12 weeks. All doses are given over 12 hours by intravenous infusion. Consult manufacturer's instructions.

Special Care

Elderly patients, high blood pressure, angina, ischaemic heart disease. Blood platelets must be monitored during course of treatment. Women of child-bearing age must use reliable contraception and avoid pregnancy during treatment and for 6 months afterwards.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver or kidney disease, secondary cancers, lily infection, systemic infections, known allergy to mouse proteins.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Live viral vaccines, other drugs used in chemotherapy.

Known Side Effects

Reactions at injection site, fever, headaches, malaise, gastrointestinal upset, weakness, anorexia, 'flu-like symptoms, respiratory disorders, fluid retention, skin reactions, pains in muscles and joints, effects on peripheral and central nervous system, sensitivity to temperature changes, effects on metabolism and haematology; abnormal liver function, increased risk of infections. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the safety of Medicines (CSM).
