Macrobid
What is it?
A preparation which is a nitrofuran antibacterial drug available as yellow/blue modified-release capsules containing 100mg of nitrofurantoin, marked Eaton BID. Usedfor: infections of urinary tract, prevention of infection during surgical procedures on genital/urinary tract, pyelitis.
Dosage
Adults, treatment, 1 tablet twice each day with food; prevention of infection, 1 tablet twice daily for 4 days starting on day of surgery.
Special Care
Breastfeeding, diabetes, deficiency of vitamin B, debilitation, anaemia, imbalance in electrolyte (salts) levels. Elderly patients and those on long-term treatment require monitoring of liver, lung and nerve function.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnant women atend of pregnancy, kidney disease.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Probenecid, quinolones, magnesium trisilicate, sulphinpyrazone.
Known Side Effects
Gastro-intestinal upset, blood changes, allergic responses, anorexia. Drug should be withdrawn if hepatitis, lung reactions, peripheral nerve damage or haemolysis occur.
