Macrodantin
What is it?
an antibacterial nitrofuran drug available as white/yellow capsules containing 50mg of nitrofurantoin, and yellow capsules containing 100mg of nitrofurantoin.
Medical Uses
Treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections (during surgical procedure), pyelitis.
Dosage
Adults and children over 10 years, treatment of acute infection, 50mg 4 times each day for 1 week; serious, recurring infection, 100mg 4 times each day for 1 week. L, ong-term suppression of infection, 50-100mg each day taken as single dose at bedtime. Prevention, 50mg 4 times each day for beginning on day of procedure and continuing for further 4 days. Children, 3 months to 10 years, acute infection, 3mg per kg of body weight in divided doses each day for 1 week. Suppression of infection, 1mg per kg of body weight once each day.
Special Care
Breastfeeding, vitamin B deficiency, anaemia, imbalance in electrolyte (salts) levels, diabetes. Elderly patients and those on long-term treatment require regular monitoring of liver and lung function.
Avoid Use
Children under 3 months, pregnant women at end of pregnancy, patients with kidney disease or damage.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Probenecid, quinolones, sulphinpyrazone, magnesium trisilicate.
Known Side Effects
Gastro-intestinal upset, allergic responses, blood changes, anorexia. Drug should be withdrawn if hepatitis, lung reactions, peripheral nerve damage or haemolysis occur.
