Magnapen
What is it?
A compound broad-spectrum penicillin and penicillinase-resistant (i. e. resistant to enzymes produced by some bacteria) preparation. It is available as turquoise/black capsules containing 250mg of ampicillin and 250mg of flucloxacillin, marked MAGNAPEN. Also, MAGNAPEN SYRUP containing 125mg of ampicillin and 125mg of flucloxacillin per 5ml of liquid. MAGNAPEN INJECTION, available as a powder in vials for reconstitution and injection, containing 250mg of ampicillin and 250mg of flucloxacillin.
Medical Uses
Severe infections caused by unknown organisms; mixed infections in which b-lactarnase producing staphylococci bacteria are involved.
Dosage
Capsules and syrup, adults and children over 10 years, 1 capsule or 10ml syrup 4 times each day taken thirty minutes to 1 hour before meals. Injection, 500mg 4 times each day. Children, under 10 years, 5ml syrup 4 times each day thirty minutes to 1 hour before meals. Injection, aged under 2 years, quarter of adult dose; aged 2 to 10 years, half adult dose.
Special Care
New-born babies, suspected leukaemia originating in lymphoid system, liver disease, patients with glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis). If treatment is longterm, liver and kidney function should be checked.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, effects on haematology, allergic reactions; rarely, cholestatic jaundice, interstitial nephritis (kidney inflamma Lion). Fits may occur in patients with kidney failur given high doses by intravenous injection.
