Maxalt

What is it?

A 5HT1 agonist available as capsule-shaped, pink tablets in two strengths, containing 5mg of rizatriptan as benzoate, marked MSD 266 and 10mg of rizatriptan as benzoate, marked MSD 267 andMAXALT. Also, MAXALT MELT, available as oral, white dissolvable wafers marked with a rounded square, containing 10mg of rizatriptan.

Medical Uses

Acute migraine headachewhich may be accompanied by aura.

Dosage

Adults aged over 18 years, tablets, 10mg swallowed whole with water or 1 Maxalt Melt dissolved on tongue.

Special Care

Elderly persons, pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney or liver disorders, patients should be examined for risk of coronary or ischaemic heart disease before treatment begins. Phenylketonuria (Maxalt Malt only).

Avoid Use

Coronary or ischaemic heart disease, previous cerebralvascular event or transient ischaemic attack, peripheral circulatory disease, Prinzmetal's angina, serious liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, unusual forms of headache, certain types of migraine (hemiplegic or basilar).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Other 5HTi agonists, ergotamine, derivatives or ergot, propanolol, MAOIs, substrates of CYP2D6, St John's Wort.
