What is it?
An adsorbent preparation available as effervescent granules comprising 5g of activated charcoal.
Medical Uses
Poisoning and overdose with drugs.
Dosage
Adults and children, 5 to 10g dissolved in 100 to 200ml of water and drunk; to be repeated every 20 minutes until full dose has been taken which is 10 times the quantity of poison, if this is known or as directed by specialist. Maximum dose of Medicoal is 50g in 24 hours. Gastric lavage (washing out of stomach), 30 to 50g in 500ml of water via stomach tube then Medicoal by mouth.
Special Care
Conditions in which sodium intake must be strictly limited.
Avoid Use
Poisoning by cyanides, sulphonylureas, DDT, strong alkalis or acids, iron salts, malathion or that in which is a specific antidote is required.
