Megace

What is it?

A hormonal progestogen preparation available as tablets of 2 strengths: scored, white tablets contain 40mg of megestrol acetate marked 40; oval, off-white scored tablets contain 160mg of megestrol acetate, marked 160.

Medical Uses

Breast and endometrial cancer.

Dosage

Adults, breast cancer, 160mg each day as single or divided doses. Endometrial cancer, 40 to 320mg each day in divided doses. All taken for at least 2 months.

Special Care

Patients with inflamed veins (thrombophlebitis), severe liver disorders.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding.

Known Side Effects

Nausea, fluid retention, gain in weight, breakthrough bleeding from womb, suppression of adrenal glands.
