Menopur
What is it?
A gonadotrophin (agent that acts on the sex organs) available as a powder in vials with diluent for reconstitution and injection containing menotrophin equivalent to 75iu of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and 75iu of LH (luteinising hormone).
Medical Uses
Hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism in men (underacYiuity/failure of testicles to produce mature sperm due to lack of gonadotrophin); anovulatory infertlity in women (infertility due to failure to ovulate), Also, to stimulate superovulation for IVF treatment.
Dosage
Adults, men, according to manufacturer's literature; women, anovulatory infertility, according to oestrogen levels; superovulation, 75 to 300iu each dad, Also, conduit manufacturer's instructions. All injections given either intravenously or intramuscularly.
Special Care
Men, ensure there is no other cause of infertility prior to beginning treatment; women, hormonal disorders or intracranial lesions must be treated before beginning therapy. Development of follicles and oestrogen levels should be regularly checked during course of treatment.
Avoid Use
Men, tumours of prostate gland or testicles; women, pregnancy, breastfeeding, tumours of ovaries, womb or breasts.
Known Side Effects
Allergic reactions, women, overstimulation of ovaries, enlargement and/or rupture, multiple pregnancy.
