What is it?

A gonadotrophin (stimulating the ovaries or testicles) preparation available as a powder in vials with diluent for reconstitution and injection available in two strengths, containing either 75iu of menotrophin, equivalent to 75iu of follicle stimulating hormone and 75iu of leutinising hormone, or 150iu of menotrophin, equivalent to 150iu of follicle stimulating hormone and 1501u of leutinising hormone.

Medical Uses

Men, hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (underactivity/failure of the testicles to produce mature sperm due to lack of stimulation by gonadptrophin); women, anovulatory infertility (infertility due to failure of ovaries to produce and release a mature egg each month), Also, to stimulate super-ovulation (production and release of several eggs) for IVF treatment.

Dosage

All doses given by intramuscular injection; men, according to manufacturer's instructions; women, anovulatory infertility, according to manufacturer's instructions; superovulation, 150 to 225iu each day.

Special Care

Men, ensure there is no other cause of infertility prior to beginning treatment; women, hormonal disorders or intracranial lesions must be treated before beginning therapy. Development of follicles and oestrogen levels should be regularly checked during course of treatment.

Avoid Use

Men, tumours of prostate gland or testicles; women, pregnancy, breastfeeding, tumours of ovaries, womb or breasts.

Known Side Effects

Allergic reactions, women, overstimulation of ovaries, enlargement and/or rupture, multiple pregnancy.
