Mestinon
What is it?
An anticholinesterase preparation which acts to inhibit the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine so that the effects of the neurotransmitter are prolonged. It is produced in the form of white, quarter- scored tablets containing 60mg of pyridostigmine bromide, marked ICN.
Medical Uses
Paralytic ileus (a condition in which the normal movement of the intestine decreases or fails, as a result of various causes), myasthenia gravis.
Dosage
Adults, paralytic ileus, 1 to 4 tablets, as needed; myasthenia gravis, 5 to 20 tablets each day in divided doses. Children, paralytic ileus, 15 to 60mg, as needed; myasthenia gravis, new born babies, 5 to 10 mg every 4 hours; aged under 6 years, 30mg at first; aged 6 to 12 years, 60mg at first. Both doses may be gradually increased by 1530mg each day until condition is controlled.
Special Care
Epilepsy, Parkinsonism, asthma, recent heart attack, stomach ulcer, kidney disease, slow heart beat, low blood pressure, abnormal overactivity of vagus nerve.
Avoid Use
Patients with gastro-intestinal or urinary tract obstruction.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Cyclopropane, depolarizing muscle relaxants, halothane.
Known Side Effects
Over-production of saliva, gastrointestinal upset.
