Micardis

What is it?

An antihypertensive preparation which is an angiotensin II antagonist available as oblong, white tablets in three different strengths containing 20mg, 40mg or 80mg of telmisartan.

Medical Uses

High blood pressure.

Dosage

Adults, usual starting dose of 40mg once each day, then increasing or decreasing as required to dose in order of 20 to 80mg once each day. Usual maintenance dose is in the order of 40mg once daily.

Special Care

Ulcer in stomach or intestine, kidney disease, kidney transplant, high blood pressure connected with renovascular disease, enlarged heart, primary aldosteronism (over-secretion of the hormone aldosterone, which regulates sodium and potassium levels in the blood, from the adrenal glands), narrowing of aortic or mitral valves of heart, volume depletion in renovascular system, liver disease, stimulation of renin - angiotensin - aldosterone system.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe liver or kidney disorders, intolerance to fructose, obstruction of bile duct.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Digoxin, lithium.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, diziness, headaches, weariness, pain, malaise, infection in upper repiratory system and urinary tract. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
