Mictral

What is it?

A compound preparation combining a quinolone and alkalysing agent available as dissolvable granules in sachets, containing 660mg of nabdixic acid, anhydrous citric acid, sodium bicarbonate and sodium citrate (equivalent to 4.1g citrate).

Medical Uses

Cystitis and infections of lower urinary tract.

Dosage

Adults, 1 sachet in water taken 3 times daily in divided doses for a period of 3 days.

Special Care

Severe cerebral arteriosclerosis (hardening/narrowing of arteries to brain), liver disease, G-6-PD deficiency (enzyme deficiency). Sunlight should be avoided. Patients should be monitored for kidney and liver function and blood counts after 2 weeks of treatment.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breast- feeding, kidney disorders, history of fits, porphyria (a rare, inherited metabolic disorder involving increased production of naturally- occurring substances called porphyrins).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Antibacterials, cyclosporin, probenecid, anticoagulants, melphalan.

Known Side Effects

Gastro-intestinal upset, allergic effects, effects on central nervous system, disturbance of vision, convulsions. Rarely, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia, leucopenia, numbness/pins-and-needles/tingling sensations (paraesthesia), acidosis, interruption in flow of bile.
