Minims Tropicamide
What is it?
An anticholinergic preparation available as preservative-free, single dose eyedrops in 2 strengths containing 0.5% and 1% tropicamide.
Medical Uses
As a short-term mydriatic and cycloplegic drug. (A mydriatic produces mydriasis - dilation of the pupil of the eye by contraction of certain muscles in the iris. A cycloplegic produces cycloplegia - paralysis of the muscles of accommodation in the eye along with relaxation of the ciliary muscle). Enables ophthalmic examinations and procedures to be carried out.
Dosage
Adults and children, 2 drops every 5 minutes then 1 or 2 drops after 30 minutes if needed.
Special Care
In babies, pressure should be applied over the tear sac for 1 minute. Patients should not drive for 2 hours.

If using in babies, pressure should first be applied to tear sac for 1 minute prior to insertion of eyedrops.
Avoid Use
Narrow angle glaucoma.
Known Side Effects
Stinging on application which is short-lived.
