Minocin

What is it?

A tetracycline antibiotic available as film-coated orange tablets containing 100mg minocycline as hydrochloride, markedM over 100. Also, MINOCIN MR, brown/orange modified-release capsules containing 100mg of minicycline hydrochloride marked 8560 and LEDERLE. Also, MINOCIN 50, film-coated, beige tablets containing 50mg of minocycline as hydrochloride marked M over 50.

Medical Uses

Minocin: ear, nose and throat, respiratory, soft tissue, skin and urinary tract infections. Minocin MR and Minocin 50, acne.

Dosage

Adults, Minocin, 1 tablet twice each day swallowed whole. Minocin MR, 1 tablet each day swallowed whole; Minocin 50, 1 tablet twice each day; acne treatment should continue for at least 6 weeks.

Special Care

Liver disorders; if therapy is longterm, patients should be monitored every 3 months for signs of pigmentation, SLE (systemic lupus crythematosus) and hepatitis.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breast- feeding, kidney failure.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Mineral supplements, antacids, peniciliins.

Known Side Effects

Gastro-intestinal upset, allergic reactions, skin effects, raised pressure within skull, dulled hearing, vestibular disorders (affecting organs of balance within ear). In rare cases, pericarditis, myocarditis (inflammation of pericardium and myocardium (membranes) surrounding heart), uasculitis (inflammation of veins), pancreatitis, interstitial nephritis (kidney inflammation), kidney failure, SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus). In the event of liver toxicity or hyperpigmentation, drug should be discontinued.
