Modalim
What is it?
An isobutyric acid derivative and fibrate, used to lower the levels of lipds (fats) in the blood, available as capsule-shaped, white, scored tablets containing 100mg of ciprofibrate and marked MODALIM.
Medical Uses
Hyperlipidaemias (elevated blood lipid levels) of types Ih, lIb, III and IV which cannot be controlled by diet alone.
Dosage
Adults, 1 tablet as a single daily dose.
Special Care
Liver or kidney disease, underactive thyroid gland; liver tests should be carried out during the course of treatment. Patients should immediately report onset of weakness or muscle pain without any obvious cause.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe liver or kidney disease.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Hypoglycaemics taken by mouth, oral contraceptives, fibrates, anticoagulants, statins.
Known Side Effects
Vertigo, gastro-intestinal upset, rash, loss of hair, headaches, impotence. In rare cases, sleepiness, dizziness. Muscle pain - in the event of muscle toxicity, CPK levels should be monitored and treatment stopped if these reach a level 10 times greater than normal.
