What is it?
An antipsychotic preparation which is a depot phenothiazine group III, available in ampoules and disposable syringes containing 25mg of fluphenazine decanoate per ml as oily injection. Also, MODECATE CONCENTRATE in ampoules containing 100mg of fluphenazine decanoate per ml, as oily injection.
Medical Uses
Maintenance treatment of certain psychiatric illnesses, especially schizophrenia.
Dosage
Adults, 12.5mg by deep intramuscular injection (into gluteal muscle) as first test dose in order to see if patient is liable to experience extrapyramidal (e. g. involuntary, reflex-type muscle movements) symptoms. Then, usual dose in the order of 12.5mg-100mg, according to response, every 2 to 5 weeks. Elderly receive lower initial test dose of 6.25mg. Also, see manufacturer's instructions.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, elderly, Parkinson's disease-patients who exhibit extrapyramidal symptoms (reduce dose or use alternative drug), myasthenia gravis. Also, heart disease, heart arrhythmias, epilepsy, liver or respiratory diseases, enlarged prostate gland, underactive thyroid gland, glaucoma, thyrotoxicosis (toxicity of thyroid gland).
Avoid Use
Children, blood changes, phaeochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumour), liver or kidney failure, severe heart disease, severe atherosclerosis of cerebral arteries, coma. Also, those suffering from severe depression. For Possible interactions and Side effects, consult manufacturer's prescribing notes.
