What is it?
An antipsychotic preparation which is a phenothiazine group III drug available as sugar-coated tablets in 3 strengths all containing fluphenazine hydrochloride; pink tablets contain 1mg, yellow tablets contain 2.5mg and white tablets contain 5mg.
Medical Uses
Schizophrenia, paranoia, mania, hypomania, additional therapy in short-term treatment of anxiety, agitation and disordered behaviour.
Dosage
Adults, schizophrenia, psychoses, mania, hypomania, 2.5mg to 10mg as 2 or 3 divided doses each day with a maximum of 20mg. Anxiety, agitation and non-psychotic states, 1 to 2mg twice each day at first and then according to response. Elderly persons receive lower doses.
Special Care
Elderly, pregnancy, breastfeeding; patients with Parkinson's disease who exhibit extrapyramidal reactions (e. g. involuntary reflex- type muscle movements) should receive lower doses or alternative drug. Myasthenia gravis, enlarged prostate gland, thyrotoxicosis (toxicity of thyroid gland), heart disease, heart arrhythmias, epilepsy, liver or respiratory diseases, underactive thyroid gland, glaucoma. Also, when weather is very hot.
Avoid Use
Children, serious heart conditions, phaeochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumour), liver or kidney failure, severe atherosclerosis of cerebral arteries, blood changes, coma. Also, patients who are severely depressed. For Possible interactions and Side effects, see manufacturer's literature.
