Monotrim

What is it?

An antibacterial and folic acid inhibitor available as white, scored tablets in 2 strengths, containing 100mg of trimethroprim coded GEA and AE over 2; Also, containing 200mg of trimethropin coded GEA and DE over 5. Also, MONOTRIM SUSPENSION, containing 50mg of trimethropin per 5ml. Also, MONO- TRIM INJECTION containing 20mg of trimethropin as lactate per ml.

Medical Uses

Urinary tract infections and other infections responsive to trimethoprim.

Dosage

Adults, tablets or suspension, 200mg twice each day; prevention of infections, 100mg taken at night. Injection, 200mg by intravenous injection every 12 hours. Children, tablets or suspension, acute infections, aged 6 weeks to 5 months, 25mg; 6 months to 5 years, 50mg; 610 12 years, 100mg. All doses taken twice each day; prevention of infections, 2mg per kg of body weight each day, taken at night Injection, 8mg per kg of body weight each day in 2 or 3 divided doses by intravenous injection.

Special Care

Elderly, new born babies, folate deficiency, kidney disorders. During long-term treatment, regular blood tests should be carried out.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, babies aged under 6 weeks, blood changes, serious kidney disease or dialysis patients in whom levels in blood cannot be checked.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Rifampicin, digoxin, cyclosporin, phenytoin, bone marrow suppressants.

Known Side Effects

Skin rashes, allergic reractions, gastro-intestinal upset, sensitivity to light. In rare cases, anaphylaxis, aseptic meningitis, erythema multiforme (skin disorder), angioedema (widespread swelling), death of skin cells (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
