Motrin

What is it?

An NSAID and propionic acid, available in the form of capsule- shaped, film-coated, white tablets containing 800mg of ibuprofen.

Medical Uses

Pain, rheumatism and other bone and muscle disorders including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, Still's disease, non-rheumatoid arthropathies and ankylosing spondylitis.

Dosage

Adults, 1200-1800mg each day in 3 divided doses, the maximum being 2400mg daily. Children, 20mg per kg of body weight each day with a maximum dose of 500mg in 24 hours for children weighing less than 30kg. For juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, 40mg per kg of body weight may be given each day.

Special Care

Elderly, liver or kidney disorders, high blood pressure, heart disease, defects of blood coagulation, asthma, previous disorders of gastrointestinal tract.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, patients with known allergy to NSAID or aspirin, stomach ulcer.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Thiazide diuretics, anticoagulants, quinolones, cardiac glycosides, corticosteroids, antihypertensives, mifepristone, lithium, methotrexate.

Known Side Effects

Rash, gastrointestinal disorder or bleeding, fluid retention, thrombocytopenia. Drug should be withdrawn if symptoms affecting eyes occur. All cases of aseptic meningitis must be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
