Movicol
What is it?
An iso-osmotic laxative preparation available as a powder in single dose sachets for reconstitution with water, containing 13.125g of polyethylene glycol, 178.5mg of sodium bicarbonate, 350.7mg of sodium chloride and 46.6mg of potassium chloride.
Medical Uses
Impacted faeces and chronic constipation.
Dosage
Contents of sachet should be reconstituted with 125ml of water; adults, constipation, 1 to 3 sachets each day in divided doses; if using long-term, 1 to 2 sachets each day. Faecal impaction, 8 sachets within 6 hours each day for up to 3 days, in accordance with manufacturer's literature.
Avoid Use
Children, inflammation of bowel, perforation or obstruction in gastrointestinal tract, toxic megacolon, ulcerative colitis, ileus (any form of intestinal obstruction including twisting of the gut).
Known Side Effects
Nausea, abdominal extension. In rare cases, allergic reactions.
