What is it?
An opiate preparation and controlled drug available as sustained- release capsules in a number of different strengths, all containing morphine sulphate. Light blue capsules contain 30mg; brown capsules contain 60mg; pink capsules contain 90mg; olive capsules contain 120mg; blue capsules contain 150mg; red capsules contain 200mg. all are marked with strength and MS OD.
Medical Uses
Sustained relief of severe pain, especially when weaker opioids have failed.
Dosage
Adults, when other opioids have failed, 60mg each day at first. When changing from parenteral morphine, increased dose at first, as directed by doctor. All dosages should then be adjusted to control pain for 24 hours. all capsules to be taken once each day, either swallowed whole or the contents mixed with soft, cold food. Children, aged over 1 year, 0.4 to 1.6mg per kg of body weight once each day with dosages adjusted as for adults and as directed by doctor.
Special Care
Elderly, kidney and liver disease, underactive thyroid gland, low circulating blood volume, enlarged prostate gland, raised pressure within skull, insufficiency of adrenal cortical hormones, pancreatitis, inflammation of the bowel.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, head injury, depressed respiration, acute liver disease, delayed stomach emptying, paralytic ileus, during 24 hour pre and postoperative periods.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Cimetidine, MAOIs, cns depressants.
Known Side Effects
Sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, itching, allergic nettle rash, constipation, tolerance and dependence. Drug should be withdrawn in the event of paralytic ileus (failure of normal movement along intestine).
