Myocet

What is it?

A cytotoxic preparation available as a powder in vial, liposomes in vial and buffer in vial containing liposomal-encapsulated doxorubicincitrate complex (equivalent to 50mg of doxorubicin hydrochloride).

Medical Uses

In conjunction with cyclophosphamide for metastatic breast cancer.

Dosage

Adults, the preparation is reconstituted and diluted to a concentration of 0.4 to 1.2mg per ml and given at a dose rate of 60 to 75mg per metre squared of body surface area by intravenous infusion, over a 1 hour period. Dosages are given once every 3 weeks.

Special Care

History of heart and circulatory disease, impaired heart function, previous treatment with anthracyclines, bone marrow suppression. ECG and left ventricular function and blood counts should all be monitored during treatment. Liver function should be checked before and during therapy and doses reduced if impaired.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breast- feeding, severe bone marrow suppression.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Inhibitors of pglycoprotein, cyclosporin, anthracyclines, phenobarbitone, warfarin, other cardiotoxic drugs, phenytoin, verapamil, anthrequinones, streptozocin, paclitaxel.

Known Side Effects

Abnormally low levels of white blood cells (thrombocytopenia, neutropenia), neutropenic fever, anaemia, weakness, skin reactions, gastrointestinal upset, baldness, infections, mucositis (inflammation of mucous membranes), stomatitis (mouth inflammation). Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
