Naprosyn SR
What is it?
A propionic acid, available as white, scored, film-coated, capsule- shaped tablets containing 500mg of naproxen as sodium salt, marked 500. Also, NAPROSYN EC, available as enteric-coated, white tablets in 3 strengths containing 250mg, 375mg and 500mg of naproxen, marked NPR EC 250, Naprosyn EC and NPR EC 500, respectively. Also, NAPROSYN TABLETS, available as scored, buff- coloured tablets in 2 strengths containing 250mg of naproxen, marked NPR LE 250 and oval-shaped tablets containing 500mg of naproxen, marked NPR LE 500.
Medical Uses
Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, musculoskeletal disorders, acute gout, dysmenorrhea (painful periods).
Dosage
Adults, Naprosyn SR, 1 or 2 tablets once each day swallowed whole; Naprosyn EC, Naprosyn tablets, 500 to 1000mg each day either as single dose taken at night or in the morning or as 2 divided doses at 12 hour intervals. For gout, 750mg at first then 250mg every 8 hours; for musculoskeletal disorders and dysmenorrhoea, 500mg to start with and then 250mg every 6 to 8 hours, as needed to a maximum of 1250mg daily after first day of treatment. Children, for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) only, use Naprosyn tablets and Naprosyn EC only, aged 5 to 16 years, 10mg per kg of body weight each day in 2 divided doses at 12 hour intervals.
Special Care
Elderly, liver or kidney damage, heart failure, asthma, a history of gastro-intestinal lesions. Patients being treated long-term require monitoring.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, stomach ulcer, allergy caused by aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Ace inhibitors, corticosteroids, β-blockers, lithium, mifepristone, cardiac glycosides, anticoagulants, adrenal function tests, cyclosporin, quinolones, sulphonylureas, hydantoins, frusemide, methotrexate, diuretics, probenecid.
Known Side Effects
Headache, kidney and liver disorders, gastrointestinal intolerance, rash, vertigo, blood changes, tinnitus (ringing in ears).
