Navelbine

What is it?

A vinca alkaloid available as a solution in vials for injection containing 10mg of vinorelbine as tartrate.

Medical Uses

Either singly or in combination with other drugs to treat certain forms of lung and breast cancer.

Dosage

Adults, according to manufacturer's literature. To be given intravenously only, by specialist trained in the administration of vinorelbine.

Special Care

Fatal if given by intrathecal route; liver disorders. Blood must be monitored and drug can only be given if haematology results are satisfactory - treatment may need to be delayed if platelets and/or neutrophils are low.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe liver disorders.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, allergic responses, intestinal paralysis, baldness, inflammation of veins at injection site, anaemia, thrombocytopenia (lowered levels of blood platelets causing bleeding), neutropenia (low levels of neutrophils-white blood cells), painful jaw. Patients should report signs of infection, fever or sore throat.
