Navoban
What is it?
A 5HP3-antagonist which blocks vomiting reflexes, available as yellow/white capsules containing 5mg of tropisetron hydrochloride. Also, NAVOBAN INJECTION, containing 1mg of tropisetron hydrochloride per ml, in ampoules.
Medical Uses
Prevention of chemotherapy- induced nausea and vomiting, nausea and vomiting that occurs after surgery (PONY - post-operative nausea and vomiting).
Dosage
Adults, chemotherapy patients, 5mg by slow intravenous injection or infusion before therapy and then 1 capsule 1 hour before morning food, for 5 days. Prevention of PONV, 2mg by infusion or slow intravenous injection given within 2 hours of patient receiving anaesthesia. Children, chemotherapy patients, aged over 2 years, 0.2mg per kg of body weight by infusion or slow intravenous injection shortly before therapy is given, to a daily maximum of 5mg each day. Then, in children weighing over 25kg, 5mg by mouth on day 2 up to day 6 and for those weighing less than 25kg, repeat intravenous dose on day 2 up to day 5.
Special Care
Uncontrolled high blood pressure, disturbances of heart rhythm or of conduction.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, breastfeeding.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Drugs that affect liver enzymes, drugs that prolong QT interval (an aspect of ECG).
Known Side Effects
Constipation, dizziness, headache, tiredness, allergic reactions, stomach upset. In rare cases, fainting, slowed heartbeat, collapse, heart and circulatory arrest.
