Negram

What is it?

An antibacterial, quinolone preparation available as light brown tablets marked NEGRAM containing 500mg of nalidixic acid. Also, NEGRAM SUSPENSION, containing 300mg of nalidixic acid per 5ml of suspension.

Medical Uses

Infections of the grastro-intestinal tract caused by Gram-negative organisms, urinary tract infections.

Dosage

Adults, 500mg to lg 4 times each day; UTIs, acute infections, lg taken 4 times daily 1 hour before food for 7 days; chronic infections, 500mg taken in same way. Children, aged 3 months to 12 years, up to 50mg per kg of body weight each day.

Special Care

Pregnancy, liver or kidney disease. Avoid sunlight as much as possible.

Avoid Use

Children aged less than 3 months, breastfeeding, porphyria (an inherited metabolic disorder involving porphyrins), patients with history of convulsions.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Probenecid, c closporin, antibacterial drugs, anticoagulants, melphalen.

Known Side Effects

Rashes, blood changes, convulsions, disturbance in vision, effects on central nervous system, gastrointestinal upset, sensitivity to light, haemolytic anaemia, decline in white blood cells (thrombocytopenia, leucopenia).
