Neo-Cytamen
What is it?
A preparation of vitamin B 12, hydroxocobalwmin, available in 1ml ampoules containing 1000µg per ml.
Medical Uses
Megaloblastic anaemia, and other anaemias responsive to B12, Leber's disease (a rare hereditary visual defect), tobacco amblyopia (reduced vision although eye structure appears normal).
Dosage
Adults and children, macrucytic anaemia without neurological involvement, 250-1000µg intramuscularly on alternate days for 7 to 14 days then 250µg once per week until blood count is normal. 1000µg every 2 to 3 months for maintenance. Macrocytic anaemia with neurological invovement, 1000µg given intramuscularly every 2nd day at first, then 1000µg every 2 months for maintenance. Prevention, 1000µg every 2 to 3 months by intramuscular injection. Ambylopias and Leber's disease, 1000µg or greater dose by intramuscular injection each day for 2 weeks, then same dose twice weekly as long as improvement persisits. The maintenance dose is 1000µg every month by intramuscular injection,
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Oral contraceptives, chloramphenicol.
