Neomercazole
What is it?
An antithyroid preparation available as pink tablets in two strengths containing 5mg and 20mg of carbimazole, marked Neo 5 or Neo 20, respectively.
Medical Uses
Thyrotoxicosis.
Dosage
Adults, 20 to 60mg each day to start with in 2 or 3 divided doses until thyroid functions normally. Thereafter, 5 to 15mg each day for 6 to 18 months for maintenance. Alternatively, maintain with 20 to 60mg per day with additional 50 to 150µg of supplemental thyroxine daily for 6 to 18 months. Children, 15mg each day to start with, in divided doses.
Special Care
Pregnancy (but see literature), liver disease.
Avoid Use
Breastfeeding.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Radioactive iodine.
Known Side Effects
Joint pain, headache, itch ing, nettle rash, gastrointestinal up set, baldness. Depression of the bonemarrow. Drug should be discontinuedif there are mouth ulcers, sore throat, fever or liver disorders. Patientsshould be advised to report symptoms.
