Netillin
What is it?
An aminoglycoside and antibacterial preparation, available as a solution in ampoules in 3 different strengths, containing 10, 50 or 100mg of netimycin as sulphate.
Medical Uses
Treatment and prevention of septicaemia, bacteraemia, serious infections of the kidney, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, respiratory tract, joints, intra-abdominal and peri-operative infections. Also, gonorrhoea.
Dosage
Adults, for nonlife threatening and UTI, 4 to 6mg per kg of body weight once each day as 2 or 3 divided doses. For life-threatening infections, up to 7.5mg per kg each day in 3 divided doses, all by intramuscular or slow intravenous injection. Children (by the same means): aged under 1 week, 3mg per kg of bodyweight every 12 hours; 1 week to 2 years, 2.5mg to 3mg per kg of body weight, 8-hourly; over 2 years, 2 to 2.5mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours.
Special Care
Myasthenia gravis, Parkinsonism. Control total dosage and blood levels, particularly in cases of kidney disease.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Anaesthetics, ethacrynic acid, frusemide, neuromuscular blockers.
Known Side Effects
Nephrotoxicity, totoxicity.
