Nivemycin

What is it?

An antibacterial and aminoglycoside, available as tablets containing 500mg of neomycin sulphate.

Medical Uses

Preparation of bowel prior to surgery; additional therapy in hepatic (liver) coma.

Dosage

Adults, beginning 2 to 3 days before operation, 2 tablets every hour for 4 hours then 2 tablets every 4 hours. Children, beginning 2 to 3 days before operation, aged 6 to 12 tears, 1/z to 1 tablet every 4 hours; aged 12 years and over, 2 tablets every 4 hours.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, Parkinson's disease, kidney disorder, impaired motility of gastrointestinal tract, myasthenia gravis.

Avoid Use

Obstructed intestine.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Nephrotoxic (kidney) and ototoxic (affecting 8th cranial nerve or organs of balance and hearing) drugs, digoxin, contraceptive pill, neuromuscular blockers, penicillin V

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, allergic reaction, raised liver enzymes.
