What is it?

A vasopressin anaologue available as solution for use with a metered dose, nasal spray, delivering 10µg of desmopressin acetate per spray.

Medical Uses

Cranial diabetes insipidus, night-time bed wetting in children.

Dosage

Diabetes insipidus, adults, 1 to 2 sprays into the nose, once or twice each day; children, 1 spray. Bed-wetting, children aged over 5 years, 2 sprays into nose at bed time; if necessary, increase to 3 sprays after 1 to 2 weeks and then to 4 sprays after a further week. Night-time drinks should be controlled. Use for 3 months and then evaluate. Do not use in children aged under 5 years.

Special Care

Pregnancy, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, kidney disorders, imbalance in electrolytes, hart and circulatory disease, cystic fibrosis. Exclude alcohol abuse and psychogenic causes of polydipsia before starting treatment in adults. Avoid overloading with fluids.

Avoid Use

Heart insufficiency being treated with diuretics, toxaemia of pregnancy, von Willebrand's disease, psychogenic and primary polydipsia (intense, abnormal thirst).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Tcads, carbamazepine, clofibrate, indomethacin, glibenclamide, chlorpromazine, oxytocin, drugs affecting blood pressure.

Known Side Effects

Stomach ache, nausea, headache, fits caused by low sodium levels. Discontinue in the event of diarrhoea or vomiting. Ma-nufacturer: Norgine.
