What is it?
A progestogen depot contraceptive, available as an oily solution in ampoules containing 200mg of norethisterone oenanthate per ml.
Medical Uses
Short-term highly effective contraception irrespective of errors by patient.
Dosage
200mg by deep intramuscular injection (in gluteal muscle) administered within the first 5 days of the cycle. May be repeated once after 8 weeks.
Special Care
Liver disorder, diseases that are likely to worsen in pregnancy, heavy smokers, diabetes, abnormal vaginal bleeding, porphyria (inherited metabolic disorder involving porphyrins), ectopic pregnancy.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, acute and severe chronic liver disease, thrombeembolic disorders, history during pregnancy of herpes gestationis, idiopathic jaundice, itching or worsening otosclerosis (disorder affecting 8th cranial nerve and organs of hearing and balance), impaired liver excretory function, liver tumours, severe diabetes with vascular complications, cancer of breast or endometrium, high blood pressure, sickle cell anaemia, 12 weeks before surgery and/or during any long period when patient is immobile.
Known Side Effects
Weight changes, bloating, breast discomfort, headache, dizziness, nausea, menstrual changes, depressive mood swings.
