What is it?

Preparation of pancreatic enzymes available as orange/green capsules with enteric-coated pellets containing pancreatin equivalent to 10,000 B. P. units of lipase activity; 10,000 B. P units of amylase activity; 650 B. Eunits of protease activity. Also, NUTRIZYM 10, available as yellow/ red capsules with enteric-coated pellets containing pancreatin activity equivalent to 10,000 B. P. units of lipase activity; 9,000 B. P. units of amylase activity; 500 B. Eunits of protease activity. A/so, NUTRIZYM 22, yellow/red capsules with enteric-coated pellets containing pancreatin activity equivalent to 22,000 B. P units of lipase activity; 19, 800 B. P. units of amylase activity; 1, 100 B. P. units of protease activity.

Medical Uses

Fibrocystic disease (cystic fibrosis), diseases of the pancreas, steatorrhoea (fatty, frothy stools with unpleasant smell accompanying malabsorption syndromes, coeliac disease etc).

Dosage

Adults and children, 1 or 2 capsules taken with meals in first instance, then adjust dose according to patient response. Maximum is 10,000 units per kg of body weight of lipase per day.

Special Care

Ensure patient remains well hydrated; monitor for signs of colon damage if patient develops unexpected abdominal symptoms, especially if on less than 10,000 units per kg of body weight of lipase.

Avoid Use

Nutrizym 22 in children agedunder 15 years with cystic fibrosis.

Known Side Effects

Risk of damage to colon, irritataion of mouth and perianal region.
