Nyogel

What is it?

A β-blocker available as a gelcontaining 0.1% timolol as maleate.

Medical Uses

High pressure within eye, chronic open angle glaucoma.

Dosage

Adults, 1 drop into affectedeye(s), administered in morning.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, low blood pressure, overactive thyroid gland, 1st degree heart block, sick sinus syndrome, metabolic acidosis. Drug should be gradually withdrawn.

Avoid Use

Unstable angina, severe hayfever, 2nd or 3rd degree heart block, asthma, uncompensated heart failure, history of obstructive lung disease, heart shock, sinus bradycardia (abnormal, slow heartbeat rate), corneal dystrophy, phaeoehromocytoma (adrenal gland tumour), severe Raynaud's disease. Patients wearing soft contact lenses.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Quinidine, sultopride, nifedipine, disopyramide, reserpine, floctafenine, MAOIs, β-blockers, clonidine, oral hypoglycaemic drugs, insulin, lignocaine, verapamil, cimetidine, amiodarone, diltiazem.

Known Side Effects

Disturbance to central nervous system, gastrointestinal effects, rash, irritation of eye, short-lived blurring of vision, systemic 1-blocker effects, allergic reactions, worsening of myasthenia gravis, bronchospasm. Mnaufacturer: Novartis.
