Nystan
What is it?
An antibiotic containing 500,000 units of nystatin, available as sugar-coated, brown tablets. Also, NYSTAN ORAL SUSPENSION containing 100,000 units nystatin per ml in a ready-mixed suspension, for use with dropper. Also, NYSTAN PASTILLES containing 100,000 units of nystatin per pastille. Also, NYSTAN PESSARIES, diamond- shaped, yellow pessaries containing 100,000 units of nystatin, marked SQUIBB 457. Also, NYSTAN VAGINAL CREAM, containing 100,000 units of nystatin per 4g for use with applicator. Also, NYSTAN CREAM and OINTMENT, containing 100,000 units of nystatin per g.
Medical Uses
Tablets and suspension, oral (mouth), oesophageal and intestinal infection with Candida. Pastilles, candidal infections of the mouth; vaginal cream and pessaries, vaginitis caused by candidal infection. Cream and ointment, candidal infections of the skin and mucous membranes.
Dosage
Adults, 1 to 2 tablets 4 times each day. Oral suspension, adults and children, lml 4 times each day; for prevention of infection in newborn babies, 1ml each day. For mouth lesions, hold suspension in mouth and continue for 2 days after lesions have disappeared. Adults, pessaries, insert 1 or 2 high into the vagina; vaginal cream, insert 1 or 2 applieatorfuls high into the vagina. In each case, insert at night for 2 weeks or longer, as required. Pastilles, 1 sucked 4 times each day for 1102 weeks; do not eat or drink anything 5 minutes before taking pastille or for 1 hour afterwards. Cream and ointment, apply 2 to 4 times each day.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding. Using pessaries or vaginal cream, avoid contact with barrier contraceptives.
Known Side Effects
Tablets, suspension and pastilles, irritation of mouth, gastrointestinal upset. Vaginal preparations, mild, short-lived irritation and burning.
