What is it?

A preparation of intravenous immmunoglobulin available as a solution in vials for injection comprising 5% human normal immunogbobulin.

Medical Uses

Replacement in various immunodeficiency states, including certain congenital conditions, thrombocytopaenia purpura (bleeding disorder caused by lack of blood platelets (factors which are involved in clotting). Also, prevention of recurring bacterial infections in children with HIV, Guillane-Barre syndrome (severe and progressive polvneuropathy in which there is a development of a symmetric pattern of muscle weakness and paralysis), Kawasaki syndrome or mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (a disorder affecting young children involving lymph nodes and possibly the coronary arteries), patients who have had bone marrow transplants.

Dosage

Adults and children, replacement in primary immunodeficiency states, a single dose of 400 to 800mg per kg of body weight in first instance given by intravenous infusion. Then, 200mg per kg of body weight every 2 to 3 weeks. Thrombocytopaenia purpura, 400mg per kg of body weight each day for 2 to 5 days. Kawasaki disease, 1.6 to 2 per kg of body weight in divided doses over 2 to 5 days. Bone marrow transplants, 500mg per kg of body weight onve each week at first. Guillain-Barre, 400mg per kg of body weight each day for 3 to 7 days.

Special Care

Patients must be monitored for signs of anaphylaxis during delivery of infusion.

Avoid Use

Selective IgA (immunoglobulin A) deficiencies.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Live vaccines.

Known Side Effects

Chills, headaches, fever, back and joint pains, vomiting, nausea, allergic reactions. In rare cases, low blond pressure.
