One-Alpha

What is it?

A vitamin D analogue, alfacalcidol, available as capsules in 3 strengths; white capsules contain 0.25µg, red capsules contain 0.5µg and brown capsules contain 1µg. Also, ONE ALPHA DROPS containing 2µg of alfacalcidol per ml. Also, ONE-ALPHA INJECTION, a solution in ampoules containing 2µg of alfacalcidol per ml.

Medical Uses

Bone disorders due to kidney disease or loss of function, bone disease associated with under or overactivity of parathyroid glands, low calcium levels in newborn babies. Also, rickets and osteomalacia (bone softening) which is vitamin D resistant, malabsorptive or nutritional in origin.

Dosage

Adults, 1µg each day at first, adjusted according to response. Elderly, start with 0.5µg each day. Children, under 20kg, 0.05µg per kg of body weight each day at first; over 20kg, 1µg per kg of body weight daily, in first insatnce. Injection is given intravenously. In all cases, manufacturer's literature should be consulted.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding. Levels of blood calcium must be checked at regular intervals during the course of treatment.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Thiazide diuretics, colestipol, digitalis, barbiturates, danazol, antacids, cholestyramine, anticonvulsants, sucralfate, danazol, mineral oils.
