What is it?

An amino-acid available as white, scored, capsule-shaped tablets containing 500mg of L-tryptophan marked OPTIMAX

Medical Uses

For very severe depression which is of long-term duration (2 years or more) and which has not responded to other drugs. Only for specialist, hospital use.

Dosage

Adults, 2 tablets three times each day to a maximum of 12 tablets daily.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, elderly kidney or liver disorder. Users and specialists must register with the Optimax Information and Clinical Support unit (OPTICS). Stop treatment if signs of eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS) develop.

Avoid Use

Children, history of eosi nophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Maois, benzodiazepines, phenothiazines, 5HT reuptake inhibitors.

Known Side Effects

Symptoms of EMS syndrome - raised eosinophils, severe myalgia (muscle pains); nausea, headache, drowsiness.
