Orelox

What is it?

A cephalosporin antibiotic available as film-coated, white tablets containing 100mg of cefpodoxime (as proxetil) marked 208A. Also, ORELOX PAEDIATRIC SUSPENSION, available as granules, containing 40mg of cefpodoxime as proxetil per 5ml, when reconstituted.

Medical Uses

Skin, soft tissue, urinary tract and respiratory tract infections, gonoccal urethritis where no complications are present.

Dosage

Adults, lower respiratory tract infections, ) or 2 tablets twice each day; upper respiratory tract and lower urinary tract infections, 1 tablet twice each day. Upper urinary tract, skin and soft tissue infections and sinusitis, 2 tablets twice each day. Alldoses to be taken in the morning and evening with meals. Goncoccal urethritis, 2 tablets as one dose each day, taken with meal. Children, Paediatric suspension, aged under 6 months, 8mg per kg of body weight each day in two divided doses; aged 6 months to 2 years, 5ml twice each day; aged 3 to 8 years, 10ml twice each day; aged over 9 years, 12.5ml or 1 tablet, twice each day.

Special Care

Pregnancy, sensitivity to blactam antibiotics or penicillin, kidney disorders.

Avoid Use

With suspension, phenylketonuria (abnormal presence of metabolites of phenylalanine and phenylketone in blood. i

inborn genetic disorder).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

H2 antagonists, antacids.

Known Side Effects

Headache, raised blood creatinine levels and urea, gastro-intestinal upset, allergic reactions, tinnitus (ringing in ears), weakness, sensation of tingling, nimbness or 'pins and needles', raised liver enzymes, pseudorneinbraneous colitis, malaise, dizziness. Positive Coobs test.
